Cathy Sue Smith Rushton, 57, entered into rest Friday, January 5, 2024. Affectionately known by the children as “Tat Tat”

Cathy is the wife of Marvin Ray “PeeWee” Rushton; they have been married for 37 years. She was born in Prosperity, SC on December 4, 1966. She is the daughter of Janie Ruth Waters Smith and Elvin Jerome “Jerry” Smith, Sr. She is the sister of Elvin Jerome Smith, Jr., Mark Christopher Smith and his wife April, and Melvin Eugene Corder and his wife Rachel. Cathy is the sister-in-law of Paula Dowd and her husband Henry, and John Rushton and his wife Christian. She is the aunt of Olivia Smith, Jeremy Smith, Brittaney Marsteller and her husband Bradley, Latonya Corder, Jennifer Corder, Candy Corder, Sabrina Ann Corder, Brianna Ruth Corder, John Dowd and his girlfriend Madison Floyd, Calvin Dowd and his fiancée Haleigh Morris, James Dowd, Caroline Hall and her husband Troy, Chloe Kreider, Britanni Salley and her husband Nick, Jada Van Sickle, Jax Salley, Charli-Kate Salley, Rico Rodriguez and his wife Rachel, Kaiya Rodriguez, and the late Mandy Sue Corder. Her special friends who Cathy considered brother and sister are Mike and Debbie Rodriquez. Cathy’s fur baby is Sweetpea. Olivia’s mother is Lila.

Cathy attended Calvary Baptist Church. She was a substitute teacher for several years at Pelion Elementary School and later worked at Shumpert’s IGA. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Cathy. She loved a quiet afternoon with Marvin and Sweetpea fishing, spending time with her nieces and nephews, and days shopping with her sister. To merely say that Cathy loved and cared deeply for her family would be an understatement as she proved this day in and day out. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities such as cooking her favorite meals and serving others. Her loving and caring personality was contagious to all she met. Cathy’s love of life didn’t come to an end with her death. Her loved ones will continue to honor her by being kind, compassionate, and living life to the fullest.

Visitation is from 1 pm to 2:30 pm Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church. A Service to Celebrate Cathy’s Home Going will follow at 2:30 also in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Joey Curado and Pastor John O’Cain will be ministering.
