Mrs. Gladys Maree Horton Kell, 93, surrounded by her family, went to her eternal home on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.
Mrs. Gladys is the wife of the late Sam Henry “Dickie” Kell, Sr. They were married for 65 years until his passing in 2014. She is the loving mother of Sam Kell, Jr., Cynthia Kell Stone and her husband David, Timothy Kell, Michael Kell and his wife Yvette, and Susan Kell Joyce and her husband Tom. Mrs. Gladys is the grandmother of Eva Daniel and her husband David, D. Jesse Stone, Jr. and his wife Josette, Katie Shumpert and her husband Philip, David Kell and his wife Anna, Briana Villegas and her husband Dan, Robert Kell, Tessa Kell, Ian Kell, Tommy Joyce, Jr. and his wife Shayna, Rebecca Bullington and her husband Rob, and Sam Joyce. She is the great grandmother of Walker Daniel, Carrie Daniel, Kell Daniel, Abbie Daniel, Isaac Daniel, Gabriel Daniel, Judah Daniel, Annie Daniel, Charlotte Stone, Jess Stone III, Scarlett Stone, Joseph Shumpert, Jr., Ellie Kell, Leo Villegas, Clara Villegas, Arlo Villegas, Tommy Joyce III, and Kaylee Joyce. Mrs. Gladys is the daughter of the late Eva Carrie Rodgers Horton and the late Floyd William Horton. She is the sister of Jack Horton and his wife Loretta, the late Curtis Horton and his wife the late Barbara, the late Jenelle Scott and her husband George, the late Milton Horton, the late Willene Horton, and the late Coyt Horton.
Mrs. Gladys met the love of her life at 19 years old while in nursing school. Gladys and Dickie were inseparable, they did everything together. She worked as a nurse at Columbia Hospital in the Polio Isolation ward. After the birth of her children, she devoted her life to her family. Family was always her first priority. She was present for every family gathering, bringing her presence of joy and laughter. She adored her visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling with her husband Dickie. Her favorite trip was to Ireland. She enjoyed it so much that she went back a second time. Mrs. Gladys was a woman of faith. She led her life as an example of a Godly woman, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Even though she will be greatly missed, our family is rejoicing that Gladys is in heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Funeral Service will be 11 am, Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC. Procession line for Mrs. Gladys’s service will start at 10:30 am at Fort Jackson, please follow the procession signs. Mrs. Gladys will be laid to rest with her husband Dickie at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
