Joseph Francis Shumpert

Pelion - Mr. Joseph Francis Shumpert, 77, entered into rest on Friday, December 20, 2024.

Mr. Joseph was born on September 9, 1947, to the late Cyrus David Shumpert and the late Necola Hallman Shumpert. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Annette Shumpert Lucas.

Left to cherish Mr. Joseph’s memories are nieces Elizabeth “Liz” (Michael) Reynolds and Anna Lucas Burr; nephew David (Melinda) Lucas; great niece Sarah Burr; great nephew Lucas Burr; brother-in-law Malcolm Lucas; Shumpert and Hallman cousins, and dear friends, acquaintances, classmates, and colleagues past and present, from childhood through retirement.

After graduating from Pelion High School in 1965, Mr. Joseph completed a bachelor’s degree at Clemson University and then completed a master’s degree and course work towards a doctorate at the University of South Carolina. He spent 10 years with UPS before a long career as a computer programmer at CSC (formerly PMSC). After his retirement in 2010, he helped care for his mother until she passed away.

Mr. Joseph was a man of numerous interests and talents, as well as being a voracious reader. He shared his love of music, art, books, history and so much more with his nieces and nephews and many others. Just as he knew the lyrics (and could sing the tune!) of obscure songs and could call up miscellaneous facts and information worthy of a Jeopardy champion, Mr. Joseph knew the Bible backward and forward. He was a gentle person who demonstrated his faith with kindness and support for those who were struggling or in need.

Visitation will be 10 –11 am on Friday, December 27, 2024, with a service at 11 am, both in the chapel of Blizzard Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pelion Oaklawn Cemetery. Dr. Charles Westbrook will officiate.
