Larry Bird Obituary

Fairview – Mr. Larry H. Bird, 80, entered into rest surrounded by his family on Sunday, November, 5, 2023. The Bird family is at peace knowing that Larry is no longer in pain and is now in the arms of Jesus.

Larry was born in Jefferson, South Carolina on July 21, 1943, in his grandparent’s kitchen, to the late Agnes Scott Blackwell Bird and the late Floyd Bird. He is also preceded in death by his brother; Eddie Floyd Bird.

Left to cherish Larry’s memory is his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Mary Annette “Ann” Rhyne Bird, his children; Larry Andrew “Andy” Bird and his wife Elizabeth, Ernest “Ernie” Evan Bird and his wife Anastasia, and Kenneth “Kenny” Lee Bird and his wife Stephanie, grandchildren; Jadon Bird, Elliana Bird, Dalton Bird, Kayce Bird, Stormy Skipper, Carolina Skipper, and Raleigh Skipper, granddog; Tacoma, siblings; Janice Hallman and her husband Von, Allan Bird and his wife Maureen, in-laws; Beverly Ann Fulmer and her husband Charlie, and Reba Rawls.

Larry is a graduate of Brookland Cayce High School, where he and Ann first met and were both members of the band. Larry served his country proudly and is a Veteran of the United States Navy. During Larry’s time in the Navy, Larry and Ann wrote letters to each other and realized they were more than friends. They were later married in October of 1964. After serving in the military, he worked for Southern Bell/Bell South/AT&T for over 30 years. He retired as a Network Technician.

Larry loved his family and proved it with his hard work and sacrifice to provide for them. He actively supported his children in school activities and beyond. He especially loved his grandchildren.

Larry was a member of Pelion Church of the Nazarene where he served as a board member.  After retirement he was able to serve on several Work and Witness teams to Trinidad and Tobago, Guatemala, and Kenya.

Larry loved the outdoors and chose to buy property and move to Fairview in 1973. He enjoyed using his tractor, but his true passion was bass fishing.

Larry will be missed by many friends, as well as family.

The Bird family would like to thank the caregivers of Agape Hospice of Lexington for caring for Larry at his home. A special thanks to Whitney for the compassion and care she gave to Larry and their family for over a year.

They would also like to thank Agape Hospice House for the care given to Larry the last week of his life.
