McLane Cofer (Lane) Kirkland, of New Holland, died peacefully on May 11, 2021, at age 77. The women he loved were with him — Linda, his devoted wife, and the daughter he called “Chasi,” always his little girl. Riley Burnett, a favorite nephew, kept busy at Circle K Farms, Lane’s legacy.
Lane was the youngest of three sons born to Harold Quinton Kirkland and Margaret Cofer Kirkland. He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest brother, Harry Kirkland, who was married to a sister-in-law, Linda Austin Kirkland.
Lane also leaves behind his son-in law, Mark Jackson, who admired Lane’s fighter’s spirit and fatherly words; an older brother, James Henry Kirkland and Jim’s wife, Margaret Kay; a sister-in law, Judy Young; and two brothers-in-law, Dee Young and Ken Boles. Plenty of nieces and nephews called him Uncle Lane. He was loved by many aunts, cousins and much of the New Holland community, where he lived a life of faith and commitment to his family.
Lane was a founding member of the New Holland Volunteer Fire Department and stayed active in the New Holland Grange until the early 1980s. He also was a member of the national and South Carolina chapters of the Cattlemen’s Association. His parents gave him the opportunity to attend college, as his brothers did. But Lane chose the farm, where he learned humbleness, gentleness, godliness, patience and perseverance.
He loved the Lord, the land, his family and his friends. Lane also loved music and entertained for dances, weddings and other occasions as a drummer with The Barefoot Five, a band that over the years included his father, brothers and friends. Lane’s baritone voice also comforted families in New Holland and beyond as he sang with The Kirkland Quartet, a gospel group started by the three Kirkland brothers and their cousin, Davis Shull.
Memorials may be made to New Holland Baptist Church 2279 New Holland Road Wagener, SC 29164, Pauline Church of Christ 3036 Fairview Road Leesville, SC 29070, or Clinton United Methodist Church 332 Hollow Creek Road Salley, SC 29137.
Graveside Service is 6 p.m. Saturday at New Holland Baptist Church Cemetery, Lane’s boyhood church. The family will visit with friends there and at Lane’s home.
