Salley – Mr. Nathan “Bob” Robert Salley, Sr., 94, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, January 19, 2021.
Mr. Bob is the loving husband of Mrs. Betty Faye Leach Salley. They have been married for 67 years. He is the father of Nathan Robert Salley, Jr. and his wife Sharon, Henry “Hank” McLeod Salley and his wife Leslie, Rhett Cullum Salley and his wife Gwen, and Paul DeWitt Salley and his wife Tina. Mr. Bob is the Grandpa of Ryan Lamar Salley and his wife Samantha, Valarie Sappenfield and her husband Scott, Lloyd Turner and his wife Stacey, Brent Turner and his fiancé Allison, Audrey Salley McKay and her husband Ian, Mindy Dawn Salley, Maegwen Betty Massie and her husband Kyle, Joshua DeWitt Salley, and Christopher Nathan Salley. He is the great grandpa of Emma Shephard, Morgan Alexis Salley, Charlotte Rose Salley, Kate Sappenfield, Sam Sappenfield, Logan Turner, Autumn Shelor, Ivy Shelor, Abigail Grace McKay, Melanie McKay, Nathan “Nate” DeWitt Salley, and Della DeShannon Salley. Mr. Bob is the brother of Jane Salley Dillon, the late Betsy Salley Terry, and the late Carolyn Salley Coe. He is the son of the late Nathan Rufus “Ned” Salley and the late Francis Cullum Salley.
Mr. Bob is a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, his last rank was Staff Sgt. He proudly served his country during World War II and the Korean War. He served during the occupation of Japan and he also served in Central Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal, Purple Heart, and a Purple Heart Gold Star, Commendation Ribbon with Combat “V”.
Mr. Bob graduated Clemson A&M in 1949 with a Bachelor’s Degree. He was a Scoutmaster and he helped form the Boy Scout Troop 403. Mr. Bob helped form Salley Rescue Squad and was a commander. He retired from Dupont at SRS, where he helped achieve a world safety record of 17 million man hours without a loss time injury. He worked at various Dupont sites in the US developing safety procedures for the construction industry.
Mr. Bob was a faithful member of Salley Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, deacon chairman, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and various other committees. After Hurricane Hugo Mr. Bob became active with the South Carolina Baptist Convention helping repair churches across South Carolina. He became director of the South Carolina Baptist Brotherhood Builders where he coordinated volunteer workers and materials throughout the Southeast. Mr. Bob was Mayor of the Town of Salley for over 24 years. He is the longest serving Mayor of Salley. Mr. Bob was very active in his community. He served on the Advisory Board of Security Federal Bank and the Area 4 School Board.

The Salley family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to all of Mr. Bob and Mrs. Betty’s care givers: daughter-in-law Tina Salley, Brittany Phillips, Jessica MaCramalla, Alisha Jackson, Katherine Garvin, Patricia Nesbett, Jean Thurmund, Gloria Jean Jones, Sara Beth Shadd, and Willene Keadle.
Visitation will be 6-8 pm on Thursday January 21, 2021 at the chapel of Blizzard Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Funeral Service will be 11 am on Friday January 22, 2021 at Salley Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Salley Oakview Cemetery. Rev. Phillip Proveaux, Rev. Henry Cooper, and Rev. Gordon Robinson will be officiating.
