Mr. Paul Lavern “Vern” Shumpert, 90, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2022. Vern was born October 20, 1932, in Pelion SC, the son of the late Paul E. Shumpert and Martie P. Shumpert. He is survived by brothers, Walter (the late Joyce) Shumpert, James (Jeanette) Shumpert, Donald (Sarah) Shumpert; sisters, Joyce (Billy) Gantt, Patsy (the late Bobby) Hilyer, Faye (George) Cannon, Lynn (John) Brettschneider, and Elaine (Stanley) Spears and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Huley (Glenn) Shumpert and his sister, Frances (Morris) Gunter.
After serving in the Army, Vern worked as a quality inspector for several companies while attending the University of South Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a master’s in Education.
He enjoyed attending the antique car show near his home and driving his beloved MF 135 Tractor. He also loved bluegrass music and enjoyed spending time at Bill’s Picking Parlor in West Columbia. He was an avid history and military buff who loved to read about and expand his knowledge on the U.S. Civil War. He requests his 1950s military uniforms be donated to the S.C. Army National Guard Museum. Vern’s quick wit, intelligence, and ability to weave a good story will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at the chapel of Blizzard Funeral Home with Military Honors. The Shumpert family will receive friends following the service. Rev. Sanford Key will be officiating.
